Broadway Barks, a Star-Studded Event

Broadway’s best help rescue dogs find their forever homes.

Broadway Barks, a Star-Studded Event

It's an odd sort of idea, and yet in its sixteenth year, Broadway Barks has proved to be immensely successful. For one evening each year, dog rescue organizations from all over New York City take over Shubert Alley on Broadway, bringing dogs (and a few cats) in need of adopting. Representing the dogs are the brightest of Broadway stars, each doing their part to make New York a better place for dogs. This year's hosts were the legendary Bernadette Peters and theater/film all-star James Franco--until he had to leave to get ready for that evening's performance of Of Mice and Men, of course.

Representatives from Wicked, Aladdin, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Matilda and more all stopped by for a visit. The canine actors for Of Mice and Men on Broadway and the new Annie movie made guest appearances. In the packed crowd filled with all ages and species, I only caught a few shots, but it was a joyful, can't-be-missed experience. And you can always come next year--Broadway Barks is going to be around for a long time.

And if you can't wait that long? Monday, July 21 is the rivaling, sixth annual Broadway Meows concert.

Bernadette Peters and James Franco, the evening's fabulous hosts.
The cast of Matilda the Musical come to show off their dogs.
The Matilda crew had a lot of fun on stage.
Unfortunately, the dogs were a little unsure about being held by girls not much larger than they were.
Remember Justin Guarini? He's in Wicked on Broadway now, when he's not helping pitbulls find homes.
The cast of Aladdin definitely knows how to take a photo. That's Courtney Reed and Tony-winner James Monroe Iglehart.
Bebe Neuwirth came by to speak for the cat rescue organizations.
Someone had to speak for the cats.
The donation dogs were tired after a long day of looking cute so that people would donate to the shelters.
Don't you want to give money to a donation dog?
