Rumor: Carmelo Anthony and Phil Jackson at a Stalemate

Now that LeBron James has returned to the Cleveland Cavaliers, many free agent decisions that are in the pipeline are likely to fall into place. One, Carmelo Anthony re-joining the New York Knicks, might not be as clear-cut as it seems.

Two informed NBA insiders tell CHARGED.fm the Magazine that Carmelo Anthony and Phil Jackson are currently at a stalemate. CHARGED.fm has learned the Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers are in talks on a sign-and-trade that would bring Pau Gasol to the Knicks and ship Andrea Bargnani, Tim Hardaway Jr. and a 2018 first round pick to L.A. Anthony wants the deal made so that he can pair up with Gasol and be in a position to compete this season. Jackson is hesitant to make the deal because he does not want to trade Hardaway who he reportedly has not been shopping at all.

The two currently can't see eye-to-eye on the deal, and word is that if Jackson doesn't make the trade, Anthony could balk at New York's offer and head to the Chicago Bulls

"The Knicks are still the most attractive to Carmelo because of the guaranteed max offer," our insider says. "But Melo definitely wants to win now, and he's concerned with the state of the Knicks roster from a talent perspective."

The Knicks have done a great job at assembling young talent, from drafting Hardaway Jr. last year to their picks of Cleanthony Early and Thanasis Antetokounmpo this season and the acquisition of Shane Larkin. But Chicago can counter with more experienced veterans like Joakim Noah, Derrick Rose and Taj Gibson to go along with a strong core of their own. Throw in a proven winner with coach Tom Thibodeau, and the Bulls are set to compete right now.

A resolution should be coming soon, possibly within the next 48 hours.
