John Lithgow Behind the Scenes at Shakespeare in the Park's King Lear

In this article…

Ever wonder what goes into a Shakespeare in the Park production each year? John Lithgow, of 3rd Rock From The SunDexter, Shrek and Footloose fame, is giving us a behind-the-scenes look at this year's King Lear, set to open at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park on July 22. He will be writing a blog on ArtsBeat at the New York Times that chronicles his time in rehearsal for the show. The first entry is available online now.

Lithgow is the first actor to play the role of Lear in a Shakespeare in the Park production since James Earl Jones in 1973, so he has some big shoes to fill. How will he hold up? Either way, we'll be able to track his progress as he prepares for the role. Considering Lithgow's immense talent, his blog should be a highly entertaining read.

For more information about both Shakespeare in the Park productions, head over to their website. And if you can't get enough outdoor Shakespeare, make sure to check out all the other options here.
