Jack White to Perform at 2014 Newport Folk Festival

Editor's Note: White was a popular pick by speculators as to who the Saturday headliner would be, and now that the news is official, the Newport Folk Festival just got that much better. - Ross

Jack White, who just released his brand new second solo album Lazaretto on June 10, will be performing for the first time at the 2014 Newport Folk Festival late July as a part of his tour. His album is already #1 on iTunes charts.

The Newport Folk Festival is known for hosting folk, blues and country artists (and historically Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan and Howlin' Wolf in the 60s), so it's only right that Jack White is a major headliner in this year's lineup. Producer Jay Sweet of the Newport Folk Festival realized the necessary, and yet somehow unfulfilled, presence of Mr. White when he was chosen by cofounder George Wein to compile a list of artists who have yet to play the festival:

During that same first meeting, George also asked me what we could do to help bring the blues back to Newport in a meaningful and explosive way, something that would tie Newport’s history with Bukka White, Mississippi John Hurt, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Skip James and of course Son House to the present. I circled a name atop the list and answered, “Jack White”.

The genres of blues, country and folk have undoubtedly inspired White since the early days of his two-man-band The White Stripes, and its sound has continued to influence each released solo track and album. His presence will contribute greatly to the blues revival theme of the festival.
