World Cup Preview: Brazil vs. Croatia

The beautiful game's biggest tournament kicks off tomorrow with host country Brazil taking on Croatia. On paper, Brazil has the better team, but will the emotions of playing the world's biggest sport on home soil hamper them in anyway? If Brazil plays a little off, then Luka Modric and Mario Mandzukic, Croatia's top players, have the skill and poise to seize an opportunity.

Croatia failed to qualify for the World Cup in 2010, so expect these two to play a more inspired game. Both players are in the last years of their prime at 28 years old and know full well this is their last chance to make a huge impact on the world's biggest stage. The 2018 games in Russia will see these two top-tier players at the advanced age of 32.

The other side of the pitch sees the enormously talented Brazilian team, who sport the likes of Neymar, Alves, and Silva, along with a slew of other players who go by one name including Hulk, Oscar, and Fred.

According to FiveThirtyEight, Brazil only has a 3% chance of defeat against the Croatians and an 87% chance of victory. They are, well, the clear favorite. There are a few other things to look at going into this game:

Best Name

Croatia: Darijo Srna

Brazil: Hulk

This would be close if some guy's name wasn't Hulk. Every time you see this man on the pitch, just think of this image and you'll see why he lives up to his name. It's a shame, because Darijo Srna is such a strong name. Srna's first name, Darijo, is oh so close to the Game of Thrones character Daario. Unfortunately, Croatia's "Darijo" isn't a Second Sons sellsword.

Advantage: Brazil

Best Kits

Brazil's Home Kit:

Brazil's Away Kit:

Croatia's Home Kit:

Croatia's Away Kit:

Although Croatia's checkered home kit that resembles a cool picnic table is unique, the bright, crisp yellow of Brazil's is a thing of beauty. It is perhaps the most iconic soccer kit out there and even when they are not on top of their game, at least they always look good.

Advantage: Brazil

So, not only are the Croatians going to have to overcome a more skilled side in the Brazilians, they also need to make up the gap in kits and player names. Maybe too steep a hill to climb.

Match Prediction

Although Brazil is heavily favored, I expect the Croatians to play a competitive game. I'm taking a 1-1 draw.
