The NBA Playoffs have been pretty unpredictable thus far, so why should the news off the court be any different? It was widely believed that Steve Kerr, former NBA Champion with the Chicago Bulls and current NBA analyst for TNT, would re-team with former coach Phil Jackson and accept the vacant head coaching position with the New York Knicks. It all made too much sense for it not to happen.
But apparently, sense doesn't mean a thing. NBA.com's David Aldridge dropped a bomb on Twitter. Kerr accepted a head coaching position but not with the Knicks. Instead, Kerr will be coaching the Golden State Warriors.
Stunner: Steve Kerr spurns the Knicks, accepts Warriors' head coach job. Story coming on http://t.co/tv9kc59jsI.

It's a pretty stunning development, especially since it comes mere hours after Yahoo!'s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Knicks had caved and offered Kerr a fourth guaranteed year to his proposed contract. It appears Kerr used that for leverage, as Wojnarowski just reported that Kerr received a five-year contract with the Warriors for $25 million.
With the Warriors, Kerr inherits a team that has won 50+ games the last two seasons, though their salary cap situation isn't very appealing moving forward. The Knicks are coming off a rough season, but they have salary cap flexibility moving forward after this season. Kerr also leaves behind the opportunity to reunite with Jackson in New York.
It's a shocking decision, and one that leaves the Knicks without the coach everyone assumed they would have. Now two of the most intriguing options, Kerr and Stan Van Gundy (signed with Detroit yesterday) are off the table. But if the last couple of weeks have taught us anything, it's to expect the unexpected.
