Royal Canoe at Webster Hall [Photos]

The six piece from Winnipeg just keeps getting better, evidenced by their strong opening gig last Friday.

Last time we saw Winnipeg band Royal Canoe, they stopped by our offices for an in-studio session and really charmed us. That was back in September of 2013, and since then, they've only become more charming. Royal Canoe opened for Bombay Bicycle Club at a sold-out Webster Hall show last Friday night, and seeing how the crowd reacted to their set was a validation, in my eyes, that this band has a lot to look forward to on the horizon.

The six-piece put on a fun show with their wholly unique brand of pop music. They meld together so many genres and really use all of the technology at their disposal to great success. The synths, the double percussion, the vocal modulation, the effects pedals. All of it creates something that stands alone as something that is theirs and theirs alone. Watching the crowd slowly fall in during the show was really fun, since by the end of the show they were giving hearty ovations after every song.

And when they weren't playing music, they were showing off their cheerful dispositions. Between songs, they regaled the crowd about things like the benefits of the water taxi (no one's on it, it only costs $7, and you get to take a bunch of great pictures for your Instagram). They smiled and engaged with the crowd, and that went a long way towards warming them up.

Sooner or later, Royal Canoe is going to be headlining these venues, and these guys will deserve it.
