Michael Jackson's New Video Gets a Boost from Justin Timberlake

Jackson’s new album ‘Xscape’ dropped Tuesday with a “new” MJ/JT duet “Love Never Felt So Good”.

Only an artist like Michael Jackson could stir this much buzz with an album released nearly five years after his death. Xscape, which premiered on Tuesday, May 13, contains 8 never-before-released tracks, with Jackson vocals that were locked up in a vault until the Jackson estate went through decades of archives. One of these tracks -- single "Love Never Felt So Good" with Justin Timberlake -- already hit the Hot 100 at Number 20 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs at Number 6.

Originally written in 1983, the song has two versions on the album; one with pure MJ and one with added JT. But the album as a whole has a modern spin, combining Jackson's vocals and modern instrumentals. Producers Rodney Jerkins, who originally worked with Jackson on the track "Escape" in '99, Timbaland, Jerome Harmon, Stargate, and John McClain, worked to achieve a contemporary tone but still stay true to Jackson.

As a whole, Xscape has been received much better than Jackson's earlier posthumous album, Michael, which many purists say tried to speak for Jackson too much. Still, there are those that say "Love Never Felt So Good" never should have been remodeled to feature Timberlake.

Personally, however, I think the track is much better off including JT. The video (seen above) is especially reflective of how Jackson's music is received today. It features groups of young musicians showcasing his classic dance moves and mouthing along to his original lyrics, but with their own modern twist. The video includes Timberlake as a singer, but mostly as just another member of Jackson's fan base, enthusiastically singing and dancing along with the larger group. It also shows many clips of Jackson from his heyday, managing an authentic nod to the '80s without exacerbating the creepy notion that there is a "new" song for a deceased singer.

Overall the Jackson-Timberlake vocal combination celebrates the King himself and acknowledges a revolutionary way that he can live on in the music industry, while still giving fans a taste of the modern stuff: the ever-popular JT. Decide which version of the song you like better by downloading "Xscape" on iTunes.

In the meantime, Justin Timberlake is still incredibly busy on his 20/20 Experience World Tour. He still has a ton of dates coming up in North America in the summer, fall and winter. Check out where he'll be performing.
