Jose Fernandez Has MRI, Headed to DL

In this article…

The Miami Marlins have gotten off to a surprising 20-18 and are currently in second place in the NL East, but they just lost a big reason behind their early-season success. Young ace Jose Fernandez, who is off to a 4-2 start with a 2.44 ERA (leads the NL) and 70 strikeouts (leads MLB), is heading to the disabled list. Fernandez got roughed up by the San Diego Padres on Friday. With the team in Los Angeles to face the Dodgers, Fernandez underwent an MRI. The team just placed him on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow strain. He will head back to Florida to have more tests done.

Fernandez is one of the brightest young pitching stars in all of baseball, and this injury is a large blow to the team and to the entire league. No one likes to see promising young talent go down with injuries, especially one as good as Fernandez, so hopefully this isn't anything too serious. Anytime "MRIs" and "elbows" are mentioned in the same sentence, it's always terrifying.

The Marlins are on a three-game losing skid, and their schedule over the next month is pretty formidable. The Marlins might lose some serious ground if Fernandez is out for a lengthy period of time.
