Introducing: Morning Ritual

I got an email introducing me to a fantastic band from Portland, Oregon called Morning Ritual, and they should definitely be on your radar. In a recent review, Black Book likened their harmonies to something between Fleet Foxes and Low, but if you were expecting to hear the kind of folkiness that comes with those bands you might be surprised. Morning Ritual has an incredibly smooth R&B sound that really keeps things loose and natural. Their new single "So Cold" (which premiered at IMPOSE) demonstrates their beautiful musicianship and the stunning quality of their work.

The band, comprised of sisters/vocalists Katelyn and Laurie Shook (aka the Shook Twins), Ben Darwish on vocals and keyboards, Russ Kleiner on drums and multi-instrumentalist William Seiji Marsh. What immediately jumps out is how smooth everything is and how they can naturally change things up on a dime. For a good portion of the song, everything plays out like one of the tastiest R&B songs around, with tight rhythmic drums and guitar chugging along and the stunning vocals from both Shook sisters.

Then out of nowhere, a wonderful guitar solo that feels more suited to a classic rock song jumps in for a really satisfying change of pace. It all fits so beautifully together, and the song will definitely leave you feeling good.

Introducing: Morning Ritual

"So Cold" is the band's first new music since their self-released album last year and is available for download on the band's SoundCloud page. Hopefully more is in the works soon. Music like Morning Ritual's that is this good can become part of anyone's "morning ritual."
