Yasiel Puig Benched For Showing Up Late to Batting Practice

Editor's Note: Mattingly has to be firm with Puig so that he can get the best out of his young star. I support this decision. - Ross

Los Angeles Dodgers' outfielder Yasiel Puig was scratched from the line-up for the team's home opener against the San Francisco Giants on Friday for showing up late to batting practice. Puig arrived almost half way through batting practice at 10:26 a.m. and was met by team executives when he was leaving the field. Disgruntled outfielder Matt Kemp took Puig's place as the starting right fielder.

This is not the first time Puig has been in the manager Don Mattingly's doghouse. Last season, Mattingly benched him twice twice for violating team rules. Mattingly has also previously called out Puig on his antics, mostly recently calling for a team meeting about his bad base running. In addition, Puig has had his share of off-field troubles, including two reckless driving charges, which were later dropped.

Puig has all the talent in the world to become one of the best players in baseball. In 2013, he was phenomenal with a .316 batting average along with 20 home runs, and 46 RBI's in 104 games. He nearly made the All-Star team, but finished second behind Atlanta Braves' Freddie Freeman in the final vote. But his immaturity is holding him back and could derail his promising career. Puig must be on his best behavior and make better decisions or he could find himself riding the bench again.
