Vince Wilfork Restructures Deal to Remain in New England

In this article…

After reportedly wanting out of New England a few weeks ago, Vince Wilfork decided to stick around. Wilfork and the New England Patriots agreed on a restructured three-year, $22.5 million deal that includes $3 million guaranteed. Wilfork can make up to $8 million this season and there is no guaranteed money in the final two years of the contract, according to ESPN

Wilfork was set to make a base salary of $7.5 million and carried a cap number of $11.6 million in the final year of his contract. The Patriots approached the five-time Pro Bowler to adjust his deal, which initially angered Wilfork and prompted his request to become a free agent. However, cooler heads prevailed as the two sides were able to agree on a compromise on Thursday. The new deal should clear about $4-5 million in cap space for the Patriots.

In ten seasons with the Patriots, Wilfork has been an integral part of their defense as the anchor of the defensive line. Last year, Wilfork did not look like the same dominant nose tackle that Patriots fans became to know and love. On top of that, his 2013 season was cut short after he tore his achilles in Week 4 against the Atlanta Falcons. The Patriots hope he can get back to his usual self to play a huge part of a defense that should be much improved with the additions of Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner. Either way, his large presence on the line is a welcome sight for a defense that on paper is shaping up to be one of the best in the league.
