The long-rumored captain for captain blockbuster deal is officially done. The New York Rangers acquired Tampa Bay Lightning captain Martin St. Louis in exchange for Ryan Callahan, a first round pick in 2015, and a conditional second round pick in 2014.
The second round pick can become a first if the Rangers reach the Eastern Conference Finals. In addition, if Callahan re-signs with the Lightning, the Rangers receive Tampa's second round pick in 2015 for their seventh round pick.
St Louis, 38, is a 16-year veteran with an illustrious resume, which includes a Hart Trophy (MVP) in 2004 and two Art Ross Trophies (leading point scorer) in 2004 and 2013. This season, St. Louis is ninth in the league in points and was the leader in goals (29) and points (61) for the Lightning.
Callahan, who turns 29 this month, is a great two-way forward and for the season has collected 11 goals and 25 points in 45 games with the Rangers.
The deal was the perfect storm for both teams. St. Louis was seeking a trade out of Tampa Bay after being initially snubbed for Team Canada by his general manager Steve Yzerman. While the Rangers and Callahan, who is a pending free-agent after the season, failed to agree upon a new contract. Callahan apparently lowered his demands to around $6.25 to $6.5 million a year for 6 years, but the price was still too high for Rangers. They were only willing to go up to six years for 6 million dollars per for their captain.Want great tickets but hate paying fees? Check CHARGED.fm to find tickets for less and NO FEES!
