Could Chris Martin Be 'True Detective's King in Yellow?

In this article…

HBO's newest hit True Detective is captivating audiences with incredible performances from Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, fantastic dialogue and a mystery that has everyone guessing. Last week's episode especially has driven everyone crazy as theorists try to figure out the identity of the mysterious "Yellow King" that has now resurfaced. It could be anyone, but there is one name nobody seems to be considering: Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin.

The original lyrics for the band's breakout single "Yellow" ("Originally titled "Yellow King") have surfaced, and the dark imagery is eerily similar to the macabre details of the Dora Lange murder. There are plenty of specifics revealed that make things pretty damning for Coldplay's frontman. Released in 2000, five years after the crime, the original lyrics laugh in the face of clueless authorities that have failed to even make the connections to Martin. It's an incredibly boastful move, and the management team behind the band was smart to change things, though the band was still able to keep "yellow" as the title.

Based on the timeline, Martin would have been 18 at the time of Dora Lange's death. Plus, he wasn't even in the United States as far as we know. But with a lovely croon like his, it doesn't seem far-fetched that Martin could get a group to fall under his spell. Take a look:

Look at black stars,
Look how they shine for you,
And all the killing we do,
Yeah, everything is yellow.

I came along,
I killed a deer for you,
And gave the antlers to you,
And I was called "Yellow King".

So then I took those kids,
Oh what a thing to have done,
And I'm the King in Yellow.

Her skin,
Oh yeah her skin and bones,
Turn Dora into,
Something gruesome and satanic,
You know,
You know I love Carcosa,
You know I love Carcosa.

I swam across,
I jumped across Lake Hali,
We know what we must do.
'Cause I'm the King in Yellow.

I drew some lines,
I got them hooked on drugs,
To make our grand sacrifice,
And we are all yellow.

Their skin,
Oh yeah their skin and bones,
Turn them into
Something terrible,
And you said,
For me you'd bleed yourself dry,
For me you'd bleed yourself dry.

It's true,
Look how they killed Ledoux,
Look how we still made it through,
Look at these devil traps,
We're in Carcosa now,
They'll never find us here,
Down in Carcosa.

Look at black stars,
Look how they shine for you,
And all the things that you do.

(Whispered Outro): I am the Yellow King.

First, all of those lyrics just don't sound like they have good rhythm. That wouldn't have made for a romantic hit single no matter much Martin's smooth voice improves it. Second, Martin pretty much cops to all of the crimes and gets way too detailed with his words. If that version had leaked earlier, there's no way he could have skated around the not so subtle mentions of Carcosa, Reggie LeDoux and Dora Lange.

But, we have "Yellow" and Martin is still out there at large selling platinum albums. Who knows what other song titles and lyrics have been edited to cover up the crimes of the Yellow King.
