Steve Allen. Jack Parr. Johnny Carson. Jay Leno. Conan O'Brien. Jay Leno... again.

Now, Jimmy Fallon joins those men as hosts of The Tonight Show. For the first time in nearly 42 years, The Tonight Show returned to New York City as Jimmy Fallon took over the reigns of the historic late-night franchise. Last night was equal parts coronation, introduction and celebration. Things likely won't become normal until after this first week of shenanigans and mega celebrities, but last night was a nice indication of things to come for this incarnation of The Tonight Show.

Fallon's schtick might come off as very cheesy, but it's clear that he is sincere up on stage. He is truly happy to be doing what he is doing, he's grateful for the opportunity and the situation, and it's apparent that he's going to do whatever it takes to entertain and deliver.

Last night's inaugural show rolled out a string of famous guests and cameos. One of the better bits centered around the fact that numerous friends had made $100 bets that he would never host The Tonight Show. Those friends included Robert DeNiro (Fallon's first guest on his old Late Night show), Rudy Giuliani, Tina Fey, Mike Tyson, Kim Kardashian, Lindsay Lohan, Mariah Carey, Lady Gaga, Seth Rogen, Sarah Jessica Parker, Joan Rivers, Joe Namath, Tracy Morgan, and finally his new 11:30 competitor, Stephen Colbert. Colbert paid up in change, then took a selfie followed by this warm comment: "Welcome to 11:30, bitch."

Fallon's first guest was Will Smith, and they even broke out a "Evolution of Hip-Hop Dance" sequence that saw the duo wear overalls and do "The Carlton." Fallon's first musical guest was U2, and the band played a stunning rendition of their new single "Invisible" up on the roof with the NYC skyline and an orange sunset in the background. It was certainly an ideal start for Fallon's Tonight Show run, and hopefully he gets a much longer leash than Conan O'Brien did.
