Tracy McGrady: Baseball Player?

In this article…

Former NBA All-Star Tracy McGrady retired from basketball last year, but now he's going to try his hand at another sport: baseball. Playing professional baseball has been a lifelong dream for T-Mac, and he is attempting to realize that with the Sugarland Skeeters of the Atlantic League, the same team that recently employed Roger Clemens.

The news had been circulating somewhat when former coach Jeff Van Gundy brought it up during a telecast last week, but the Skeeters made an official statement yesterday about McGrady's baseball attempt. Via For The Win:

“Tracy McGrady is one of the most elite athletes of this era and we appreciate his interest in pursuing a life-long dream with the Sugar Land Skeeters and the Atlantic League. While the Atlantic League is considered the highest level of baseball outside of Major League Baseball, McGrady has demonstrated skill, determination and diligence during his training program at Constellation Field. We look forward to monitoring his progress.”

According to reports around the workouts, McGrady has been able to touch 91 MPH on the radar gun. Clemens himself has even been on hand to help out, but his view on McGrady's workout isn't as shiny. The Rocket claimed that McGrady was anywhere between 81-83 MPH, having trouble locating and isn't anywhere close to being able to pitch for the Skeeters.

That isn't stopping McGrady's enthusiasm or determination, though. He's committed to seeing this through, however far it goes. The Atlantic League is the equivalent of good minor league baseball, but even if McGrady were able to pitch decently, I don't know that he'd be able to parlay that into pitching in the major leagues. He's 34 years old (35 in May) and the latter part of his NBA career was littered with injuries. Disney's The Rookie this is not.

But, the Atlantic League is still professional baseball. I really hope that McGrady gets a shot with the team, be it a publicity stunt or not, because who are we to get in the way of his dreams? McGrady can't be worse than John Wall on the mound, so that has to bode well for his chances.
