Watch: Kevin Durant Can't Be Stopped

Watch: Kevin Durant Can't Be Stopped

Sorry for the obvious movie title reference, but we need to talk about Kevin. Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant has done more than pick up the slack since fellow star Russell Westbrook went down at the end of December. Here are Durant's numbers in the month of January:

38.7 MPG, 36.9 PPG, 54.0% FG, 41.6% 3P, 88.4% FT, 6.2 RPG, 6.1 APG, 1 BPG, 1.6 SPG

Not counting the recent game he missed last week against the Boston Celtics, Durant has scored at least 30 points in his last 11 games. He's gone over 40 points five times, including a 54-point outburst against the Golden State Warriors. It's absolutely absurd what he has done recently, and it doesn't look like he's going to be stopping anytime soon.

He was at it again last night against the Atlanta Hawks. With the game tied at 109 with just 10 seconds left, point guard Reggie Jackson got Durant the ball at the top of the key matched up against DeMarre Carroll. After Durant surveyed the court, Hawks forward Mike Scott flashed up to double team. That's when Durant took off with the ball on the right side. Out of the blue, Durant pulls up in for an off-balance shot between the two pairs of outstretched arms trying to disrupt the shot, and this happened:

The bucket also happened to give him a cool 41 for the game. There's a high degree of difficulty here for many reasons. The double team, being off balance, the end-of-game situation, his speed going into the shot. None of it mattered. Durant is just on another level right now, and he's doing it when his team needs him most. In Westbrook's absence, Durant has helped the team retain the best record in the Western Conference and he currently has led them to a league-best eight-game winning streak. This stuff shouldn't surprise me anymore, but I continue to marvel at what Durant does on the court, especially over the last month of games.
