Lorde Criticized For 'Racist' Lyrics

People will always find reasons to talk. Since Lorde's song "Royals" has a spot on the Billboard Hot 100, they have now begun to overanalyze its lyrics, targeting the 16-year-old New Zealand artist.

A well-known blogger blames the song's lyrics that refer to Cristal and diamond-encrusted watches since apparently, it's obvious as to who Lorde is thinking of. Daily Mail U.K. reports that author Veronica Bayetti pointed out the fact that the wealth described in the song is closely related to the kind of things favored by black rappers like Lil' Wayne.

"While I love a good critique of wealth accumulation and inequality, this song is not one," she wrote. "So, why s*** on black folks? Why shit on rappers? Why aren't we critiquing wealth by taking hits at golf or polo or Central Park East? Why not take to task the bankers and old-money folks who actually have a hand in perpetuating and increasing wealth inequality? I'm gonna take a guess: racism."

We would suggest this author calm down and consider what the New York Times had to say about this "thoughtful" song. It is certainly a nice change from all the break up songs that pop stars are continuously releasing nowadays. This unique singer has managed to surprise everyone, but this racism critique has been even more surprising.

Even if Bayetti doesn't want to read the New York Times, maybe she should consider hearing the song once again since it helps make the case itself; it's clearly not attacking any group and focusing on wealth disparities instead.

Okay, if she still doesn't believe us, maybe she should believe Kanye West, who recently said he "liked the messages" in Lorde's songs. Now, Kanye West falls into the group that Lorde allegedly attacked, right? Well, he doesn't appear to be overanalyzing and finding excuses to attack the teenage star.

Lorde reportedly had a hard time believing these compliments from Kanye were real. "I was saying to myself, 'Keep cool. This is normal.'"

All we can say is that she shouldn't be surprised at all; she deserves it. And she's not racist.
