Trailer Tuesday (Wednesday Edition): Films of Epic Proportion

In this article…

Editor's Note: This post was started on Tuesday. Unfortunately, it wasn't finished until Wednesday.

Another Tuesday Wednesday means another batch of trailers to share. The buzzword today is epic, and that takes on several different meanings. You'll see when we dive into the trailers, so without further delay, let's do this thing.

Thor: The Dark World

In this case, epic is used in a pretty literal and super-human sense. The sequel to Thor sees Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman and the rest of the characters sliding right into their roles from the first film. That was one of my favorite Marvel films, and this one looks to up the ante with the storyline. Both Asgard and Earth (and pretty much the entire universe) are in danger here, and Thor has to turn to Loki for help. That's a risky proposition that I anticipate ending poorly, but the trailer for this one is pretty enticing.

The Monuments Men

Here, epic refers to the nature of the story being told. Based on true events, a team of art historians and museum curators head into the heart of battle during World War II in an effort to recover and save stolen artwork from being destroyed by the Nazis. That, alone, sounds like an epic undertaking. Throw in a stupid good cast including George Clooney, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, John Goodman, Hugh Bonneville, Bob Balaban, Jean Dujardin and Bill Freaking Murry, and that's a recipe for greatness. The trailer strangely uses a song with more of a hip-hop feel, "Kiss the Sky," but it totally works with the tone they are going for in the clip.

How I Live Now

This is the kind of movie Saoirse Ronan should have gone right to instead instead of that dreadful YA flick The Host. Instead of a rigid, typical YA flick, this kind of role gives her some meat to show off her acting chops. The premise of a future on the brink of World War III, with a young woman (Ronan) separated from the people she loves and fighting to return to them, is very promising. Ronan has been great roles like this before, specifically in Hanna, and it's exciting to see her return to a project that can maximize her talents like this.

Muppets Most Wanted

I'm not going to lie, The Muppets put a smile on my face from beginning to end. It was one of the more enjoyable movie experiences I had in 2011, and I don't care that I was one of the only adults in the theater. The sequel is always tricky, especially after you lose likable leads Jason Segel and Amy Adams, but the creative team of director/writer James Bobin and songwriter Bret McKenzie is still in tact. As long as they are in the fold, I have faith that the quality will remain close to the original. Plus, a cavalcade of new celebrities like Ty Burrell, Ricky Gervais and Tina Fey have thrown their hats into the ring this time around. What could go wrong?

And how does "epic" apply to this? I'm not sure, but I just really wanted to include the Muppets somewhere in this post.
