Furyk Fires 65 For Lead at PGA Championship

The PGA Championship, the final major tournament of the year, teed off today at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, NY. Jim Furyk is the early leader in the clubhouse after firing a five-under 65 in the first round. It could have been one better, but Furyk gave his only stroke back on his 18th hole (which was the 9th). At the time of this post, Adam Scott is making a run and is also five under through nine holes. He vaulted to the position after five straight birdies and is in position to be at the top of the leaderboard before the day is out.

Tiger Woods, coming off a win last week at Bridgestone Invitational, struggled to score today. He finished at +1 after double-bogeying his final hole, and he left plenty of scoring opportunities out there. At +1, he's still in a decent position, but he needs to go out tomorrow and put numbers on the board.

Canadian Nick Hearn and Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez are both one shot back at -4, then a host of golfers find themselves at -3/-2. Among them are Matt Kuchar, Paul Casey, Tim Clark, Justin Rose, Steve Stricker, Jason Dufner, Matteo Manessaro, Jason Day, Zach Johnson and Rory McIlroy.

Phil Mickelson, fresh off his win at the British Open, also started off slow. He is currently at +2 through 10 holes and seems to be finding a groove, but play has been paused due to a weather delay.

With several players firing solid scores thus far, the final major is shaping up to be another competitive one, especially with the kind of names that are near the top of the leaderboard. If Tiger and Phil can work their way into this group, it will make for an even more compelling finish to the major tournament calendar. Find the full leaderboard here.
