The Ill Mind Of Hopsin 6: Old Friends

In this article…

Hopsin has come out with the sixth installment of "Ill Mind Of Hopsin" and it's a pretty heavy one. People have mixed reactions to Hopsin. Back when he was on Raw records, he made songs that are similar to much of anything else you've heard in hip-hop. With his crazy white contacts and spastic demeanor, some brush him off as another spawn of the ADHD generation. If you're one of those people, shame on you. He left his old record label a while back in search of a new, more enlightened driven direction (he's self described as "conscious rap").  He's made it clear after dropping off Raw that the record labels vision wasn't his own, and that he was sick of making "mindless rap songs."

The Ill Mind of Hopsin 6 is now out. It's different than his last ones, but equally as great. Hopsin once again shows off his lyrical abilities and brings a ton of emotion into this one. The video is right on par with the gritty lyrics, and might have you nostalgic for the times of N64 and sidewalk skateboarding with your buddies. I know I was.

It's about a sad story of growing up with your best friend, then watching him plummet down the dark path of drugs, specifically meth. If there's one thing that's different about this one than the others, it's the video production quality. If you've been following the series, you might have though he peaked at Ill Mind 5 with a constant flow of lyrics giving no rest on the beat, but that's not necessarily so. The hook on 6 makes this song a powerful one. He just dropped this one today and there have been mixed reactions toward it, notably that some fans don't like the direction of the song.

Well, when Bob Dylan plugged in at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, no one cheered him on either. Okay, maybe that's a bit of an exaggerated example, but you get the point. If you're disappointed with the direction remember that there are no set specific rules in music, and as much as the main stream likes to put those rules on it's artists, I think that Hopsin would agree with me. I'd say this is a pretty big win for hip-hop right now.

If you've never seen any of the video's he's done, do yourself a favor and check them out. This is my absolute favorite (Ill Mind Of Hopsin 5). He expresses his frustrations with a culture full of jaded youth and disenchantment toward main stream rappers who aren't relatable and empty headed. I can't tell you how much this song hits our culture right in the adams apple. Hopsin makes no apologies at calling out the youth of today for blindly following the commandments of swag and popular culture. Every lyric is like a knife through your ego. I'm glad it gained such a following (it actually reached 1 million views in less than 24 hours).

Hopsin's newest album Knock Madness is set to release on November 26th of this year on his independent label Funk Volume
