Listen: SBTRKT's New Song

In this article…

I haven't heard much from London producer SBTRKT in a little while, and I was starting to get worried. But, have no fear! He's tip-toed into the light, dropped off a song, and left just ask quickly and as normally as he usually does. This time it's an edit of Drake's new song "Girl's Love Beyonce." It's a pretty bold edit as well, turning the once seductive R&B'ish song into an jittery tune full of atmosphere. He wipes any trace of Drake's voice out of the song and instead pushes a glitchy digital vibe. This went from a track full of lush pillows and beside manners to an anxious dance floor surrounded by mirrors. What I find funny is, even without Drakes voice, the remix of it still seems to fit the vibe Drake crafted.  Take a listen below.

"Most of my ideas are written at night" he explains. "Late at night, when everything around is silent - that atmosphere is where most of this record came from, and for me it explains it's sound." He's developing into an artist and producer in his own right, not only through his audio but visually live as well. The style of his performance has become a crucial part of what makes a SBTRKT show. Always performing in his trademark tribal mask, watching him perform live is probably the opposite of what you'd expect from the average traditional producer/DJ. When you're playing alongside Sampha, you can't go wrong. The man has an insane voice and is able to create a wild atmosphere over pretty much any song.

The live show is an expansion of what has been created in the studio and the tools I've used to make them. Just because a song has been created with a laptop, it doesn't mean that is the best way to perform it live, but for me, neither is bringing in a 5 piece band to re-interpret your songs. I see live shows in a very different light to producing in a studio as it's about translating into a medium for performance. The basic setup is myself on an acoustic drum kit with extra electronic triggers, and Sampha on 2 keyboards and vocals.... although it's constantly developing whilst we learn new ways to perform songs and experiment with new ways to route our live audio. - SBTRKT

Of course it's not the first time SBTRKT and Drake have teamed up (though this newest track wasn't an official collaboration, obviously). If you remember this track from a couple of years ago, Drake spit over SBTRKT's largely popular "Wildfire." This track was wildfire when it came out.
