The Home Run Derby Participants Have Been Announced

On June 8, ESPN released the list of National and American League picks for the 2013 Home Run Derby. The event will take place on July 15 at 8 p.m. ET at Citi Field in New York.

The National League's picks have been secured from the list of players selected from this year's All Star Game roster, and look like this:

David Wright, New York Mets (NL Captain): Wright is batting .306 and has a total of 13 home runs and 46 RBIs in 85 games. A serious contender in 2006 before losing to Ryan Howard in the final rounds of the derby, Wright will have the benefit of competing on his home turf. In the midst of one of his most productive seasons, he will certainly be in it to win it.

Carlos Gonzalez, Colorado Rockies: The National League home run leader Gonzalez is currently batting .304 and has 24 home runs and 64 RBIs in 86 games. Gonzalez has hit more home runs on the road this season than he has at home, which makes him perhaps the best contender for the National league. However, the Rockies' star did leave the July 7 game early with a sprained right middle finger.

Michael Cuddyer, Colorado Rockies: Gonzalez's teammate Cuddyer is having a strong season batting at .338 and totaling 15 home runs and 52 RBIs in only 69 games. Cuddyer's 27-game hitting streak influenced Wright's choice to select the veteran right hander for this year's derby.

Bryce Harper, Washington Nationals: The youngster Harper will make his first appearance in the derby this year. After coming back from a knee injury earlier this season, Harper hit a home run his first at bat back in the line up, but is now in a 0-for-18 slump. Currently batting .281 with 13 home runs and 21 RBI's, which is impressive seeing that he's only played 51 games this season. No matter what, we know that Harper's presence in this year's derby should certainly make it... interesting to say the least.

American League captain Robinson Cano still has one spot left to fill as he waits for the All Star roster to be finalized. However, here are the players he has selected thus far:

Robinson Cano, New York Yankees (AL Captain): Cano is leading the Yankees less than productive offense with a .293 average, 20 home runs and 53 RBIs in 86 games. The 2011 winner, Cano is hopeful after last year's performance when he was knocked out early without hitting a single home run.

Prince Fielder, Detroit Tigers: Fielder was an obvious choice based on his prior wins in the derby in 2009 and 2012. The defending champ currently holds a .264 average with 15 home runs and 66 RBIs in 88 games. Though Fielder might wish his home run total was higher, he always seems to perform well at the derby.

Chris Davis, Baltimore Orioles: Chris Davis was an obvious choice for this year's derby because he's on pace to hit 60 home runs this season. Davis has a precise and powerful swing that has put him at the top of the Major League leaderboard with 33 home runs. He is also batting .316 and has 85 RBIs, and he's done all this in 89 games. He received the highest number of votes for this year's All Star Game, and has hit more home runs than anyone before the All Star Break since Barry Bonds in 2001. He's definitely a favorite for this year's title.

TBA: Finally, as mentioned, Cano is waiting to make his last pick until the rosters for this year's All-Star Game are finalized. Miguel Cabrera, Edwin Encarnacion and Adam Dunn would all be good choices as they follow Davis on the American League home run leaderboard.
