4Knots Music Festival: Fat Tony

by Photo of Ross Bernhardt

The Houston rapper mixed up a rock-heavy lineup with his tight rhymes.

In this article…

When I saw the name Fat Tony on the lineup for the 4Knots Music Festival, I sort of blindly assumed it was a rock group. Weird name for a rock group, but every other act was rock-themed. I was pleasantly surprised (and relieved, Fat Tony is a weird name for a rock band) to see that Fat Tony was a rapper, and I enjoyed his performance very much.

Fat Tony reminds me of Wale before he got really big. I could see the same sort of career projection for Tony. He has tight lyrical skills, is incredibly engaging, and his songs had this genuine feel to them that I got from some of Wale's earlier material. Not only is his flow tight, but his lyrics were awfully whimsical at times.

He was joined for the whole set by producer/rapper Tom Cruz, and the two of them put on a show that was both entertaining and a nice change-of-pace from the rock-heavy lineup.
