Rockies' Russell Wilson Chooses Football at Wisconsin

Former NC State quarterback Russell Wilson ended months of speculation and announced Monday that he will enroll at the University of Wisconsin to play football. Wilson left NC State following his junior season after the Colorado Rockies selected him in the 4th round of the 2010 MLB draft.

Wilson will be able to play right away for the Badgers because he graduated from NC State in only three years. Players who have graduated do not need to sit out the mandatory one season after transferring. Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema says Wilson will compete for the starting job against the unproven Jon Budmayr.

"Russell will come in and compete for the starting quarterback position," UW coach Bret Bielema said in a release. "This is an unusual situation, especially for a program that prides itself on developing players throughout their careers, as we do here at Wisconsin."

"However, this is a special situation and Russell is the type of player and person that fits very well with our team."

Wilson had two decisions to make. The first was whether or not to stick with baseball. He was playing for the Class A Asheville Tourists but was only batting .228. The Colorado Rockies took a chance on Wilson and gave him a $250,000 signing bonus to lure him away from football. It is unclear how much if any of that bonus he will have to return to the organization.

The second decision for Wilson was deciding where he wanted to play football. He went on only two official visits, to Wisconsin and to defending champion Auburn. Wilson had the opportunity to replace Cam Netwon at Auburn but chose Wisconsin because its offensive was similar to what he ran at NC State.

Quarterback was widely seen as one of the biggest weaknesses for the defending Big Ten champion Badgers. Wilson immediately adds legitimacy to that position boasting a resume at NC State that includes an All-ACC first team selection. Wilson was a three year starter at NC State racking up 8,545 yards and 76 touchdowns. The most important number is probably games started considering none of the current quarterbacks on UW's roster have any starting experience.

Wisconsin was already considered as one of the favorites in the Big Ten's Leaders division, especially given the tumultuous situation at Ohio State. The addition of Wilson makes the Badgers the clear favorite in the Leaders division and one of the favorites to win the inaugural Big Ten championship game along with the likes of Nebraska, Michigan State, and Iowa who are all in the Legends division.

Wilson is not the first two-sport athlete to have to decide between football and baseball. In fact, Bubba Starling, the fifth pick in the MLB draft earlier this month will have to decide between playing football for Nebraska or beginning his baseball career with the Kansas City Royals. Check back on Charged.fm tomorrow for a run down of the 5 best football-baseball athletes, including a former Royal named Bo.

The Rockies are losing a prospect but don't miss out on Tulowitzki, Ubaldo and the rest of the gang. Let Charged.fm get you out to the baseball diamond.
