Roger Federer Upset at Wimbledon

Another shocking upset takes place as the reigning champion fell in four sets today.

Roger Federer Upset at Wimbledon

The upsets keep piling up at Wimbledon. Roger Federer was the latest casualty as the 3rd seed in the tournament was defeated by 131st-ranked Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (7-5), 5-7, 6-7 (7-5).

With the loss, the defending champions on the men's and women's sides have both fallen as Maria Sharapova also lost today. If you're surprised at this sudden rash of upsets, you're not the only one. It's perplexing that so many of the top players have fallen so early in the tournament. Injuries have played a role in some of the matches, but Federer had no such ailments. This one is just a stunner.

Stakhovsky, 27, has never advanced past the third round of any major tournament and has a career record below .500. This, frankly, is something no one saw coming against a player of Federer's caliber.

The loss ends Federer's streak of 36 straight quarterfinals reached at a Grand Slam event which, if you do the math, means that he has been in the top eight for nine straight years. That's an insane statistic and a model of just how consistently dominant Federer has been during his reign. It's safe to say that Federer is finally starting to slow down, though. Of his record 17 Grand Slam singles titles, only two have come since 2010. He has only reached three Grand Slam finals in that same time frame. At 31, Federer might finally be reaching that point in his career where his dominance comes to an end.

I tink Federer still has a Slam left in him, and he will surely remain one of the top contenders in any tournament that he is in, but the level of dominance that used to be the normal for Federer might finally be over. Today's loss to Stakhovsky certainly demonstrates that.

The field is now wide open, and the road is paved clear for a matchup between Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray in the Final, but both should be extremely wary. Crazy things are happening at Wimbledon this year.
