Browns Rookie Charged With Attempted Murder

In this article…

Ausar Walcott, rookie linebacker for the Cleveland Browns, has been charged with attempted murder following an incident that took place last Sunday in Passaic, New Jersey.

Walcott, himself a New Jersey native, turned himself into police Tuesday night. On Sunday, the 23-year old linebacker reportedly punched 24-year old Derrick Jones in the head outside the Palace Gentlemen's Club. Bail for Walcott has been set at $500,000. Jones remains hospitalized in critical condition at a Manhattan hospital.

Walcott is being charged with first-degree attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault, and third-degree endangering an injured victim. If convicted of all charges, Walcott could be facing some serious jail time. First-degree murder, alone, can garner him anywhere between 10-15 years to life in prison, depending on the severity of his case. Add that to the time he will face from the other charges, if convicted, and NFL fans will not be seeing much of Walcott for a long time.

Following the example of the New England Patriots concerning their actions toward Aaron Hernandez's legal issues, the Cleveland Browns have released Walcott. The ink on his deal was barely dry, considering it was signed in mid-May, but with all the negative press sure to ensue, the Browns' decision to release him from his contract was probably their smartest choice. Walcott was signed as a free agent out of the University of Virginia.

This is not Walcott's first run in with the law, either. In 2011 he was arrested and faced charges of assault and battery following a scuffle. He was briefly suspended from the team, but reinstated when the charges were dropped.

It is unclear as of now whether or not Walcott has a defense lawyer, and no trial date has been set concerning this case.
