2013 US Open Tournament Update

In this article…

The 2013 US Open Championship at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania has had a slow start because of some bad weather that pushed the finish of the first round for some into Friday afternoon. There are plenty of golfers still waiting to tee off for the second round, but with a much clearer day there will be plenty of golf played throughout the day and night.

The conditions of the course are not very forgiving as the rain and winds has caused for some tough reads on greens and have caused some big name players to be in danger of missing the cut. 2013 Masters Tournament winner and third ranked Adam Scott shot +7 in the first rounds and is in serious danger of missing the cut, which is projected at +5 currently. 11th ranked Lee Westwood is tied with Scott at +7 and looks like he will have the weekend off as well. What is quite possibly the biggest surprise thus far in the first two days of the tournament has been the play of eighth ranked golfer Graeme McDowell, who shot a 76 in round one and a 77 in round two to finish with a +13, well off pace to make the cut.

The top two players in the rankings, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy respectively, are tied with scores of +3 through the first two rounds. After being partnered up with Scott the first two days, they could very likely be a tandem again throughout the weekend. Woods looked to be struggling with an injury to his left arm throughout the first round, grimacing after a number of his shots and shaking the arm out numerous times.

After making more headlines recently for things he said rather than his play on the course, Sergio Garcia shot a 73 +3 in the first round. He just got underway with his second round and is even after two holes.

The leader currently for the tournament is fan favorite Phil Mickelson. Mickelson’s misfortunes at US Opens have been well documented as he has finished second or tied for second on five different occasions, never being able to crack the top spot. After round one Mickelson went into the clubhouse with the lead at with a -3 67. Will this be the US Open that Mickelson is finally able to get the monkey off his back and bring home the win?

Right now Mickelson still sits atop the standings at -2 through four holes in the second round. It will not be an easy task for him though, as his playing partner Steve Stricker is -1 so far through the four holes and is hot on his heels. Currently sitting in second place behind Mickelson and tied with Justin Rose at -1 overall is Billy Horschel, who is in the clubhouse and will head into the weekend on a high note after a -3 67 gave him a score of -1 through the first two rounds of the tournament. Rose is still on the course a hole behind Mickelson and his group.
