Phil Mickelson Takes US Open Lead

Phil Mickelson has a rough history at the US Open. Five times he has been a runner up at the event, the most recent of which came in 2009 at Bethpage Black. Mickelson now finds himself in the lead early on at Merion Golf Club. Mickelson fired a three-under 67 to take the early clubhouse lead. Mickelson only dropped one stroke the entire day, and when you can do that at the US Open, you make things much easier for yourself. Perhaps Mickelson's choice to eschew the driver in favor of five wedges is paying off in terms of accuracy. Nicolas Colsaerts finished his round at (-1) and others still out on the course also find themselves two back of Mickelson.

Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Adam Scott all have yet to tee off, and neither so there will certainly be moving and shaking on top of the leaderboard. Maybe this will finally be Mickelson's year. He certainly couldn't have asked for a much better start to his tournament.
