Patrick Ewing Hired as Charlotte Bobcats Assistant

Patrick Ewing has been searching for a head coaching job in the NBA for quite a few years. However, he will have to wait at least one more season for the opportunity. Ewing, the former legendary center of New York Knicks fame, will work as an assistant coach with the Charlotte Bobcats in the 2013-14 NBA season. In 2012, he interviewed for the head coaching job in Charlotte, but was beat out by Mike Dunlap. Now he will work under current coach, Steve Clifford.

Ewing has experience in the NBA as an assistant coach. He has worked under both Van Gundy brothers - Jeff with the Houston Rockets in 2003-08 and Stan with the Orlando Magic in 2008-11. Ewing was praised for helping the development of Dwight Howard, specifically in bringing along Howard's post game. In 2011, Ewing interviewed for the Detroit Pistons head coaching job, but wasn't hired.

Perhaps the most surprising twist in Ewing's tale of coaching candidacy is the lack of involvement from the New York Knicks. Fans and analysts alike feel that Ewing's impressive time with the Knicks merits some sort of position. Thus far, the Knicks have only offered him a chance to coach their D-League affiliate, the Erie Bayhawks. Ewing turned down the opportunity and instead wandered the ever-turning pool of available coaches.

Now, as an assistant with the Bobcats, Ewing could make for himself. Over the last two seasons, the Bobcats have managed just 28 combined wins. If they add more talent to the team and pull out more wins in the 2013-14 season, it could reflect positively on Ewing, perhaps giving him the chance to get a head coaching job.
