US Blows Lead, Mexico Storms To Victory With Four Straight

by Photo of Kevin Leonard

After going up 2-0 in the Gold Cup Final, the US surrendered four straight to Mexico.

In this article…

Reminiscent of the Confederations Cup Final in 2009, when the US was up 2-0 on Brazil's team, the US against came out strong in the final match. But again, the team blew the lead as Mexico exposed a shoddy back four that desperately missed Steve Cherundolo's presence. Cherundolo, a veteran defender, went out early in the match with an injury.

Mexico dominated the second half scoring early on a second goal by Barrera and on an absolute beauty by Dos Santos in the 76th minute of the match that saw about 5 US defenders standing around in the box.

Mexico advances to the 2013 Confederations Cup, which will be held in Brazil.
