10 Songs for Summer 2013

by Photo of Emily Maas

Here’s a list of ten songs we think you might be hearing more of this summer!

10 Songs for Summer 2013

As we wait for the reigns of Macklemore, Justin Timberlake's 20/20 Experience , and Pink and Nate Ruess' "Just Give Me A Reason" to loosen, new contenders for the song of the summer begin to arise from their ashes.

Of course, it is very likely we will be hearing these songs and artists all summer ad nauseum, but they probably won't be the blockbuster summer hit we're expecting for 2013. They've already had their time.

Now it's time for a new hit. Whether it's one that been hiding behind the front lines for months, or a track that just dropped, this summer's hit song is bound to be a good one. It's at least going to top last year's "Call Me Maybe," I hope.

So sit back, and think about all the times you'll be driving with your windows down, or hanging at the beach, blasting that one summer hit with all your friends, and check out our best guesses at 2013's Song of the Summer.

The Other Side - Jason Derulo

This song is my  #1 favorite for the Song of the Summer. This really might be it. It's fairly new to the charts, but it's super catchy, and perfect for those hot summer nights. Especially with that line, "Sparks fly like the fourth of July." We see what you're doing Jason Derulo, and we like it. Katy Perry did it with "Firework" and it worked, so why not?

I Love It - Icona Pop feat. Charli XCX

"I Love It" has been slowly making a climb to the top. From it's debut last May, to it's spot in an episode of "Girls" in January, it's gained a lot of commercial success. Predicting that it keeps climbing as steadily as it has, it's likely to be a contendor for the Song of the Summer. Plus, there's the opening line, "I got this feeling on the summer day when you were gone" to justify it's rightness in a Songs of Summer list. Though it was probably intended to be a summer hit last summer, it's better late than never, right?

Get Lucky - Daft Punk

This is the only intense competition for Jason Derulo's "The Other Side." Daft Punk's Random Access Memories is likely to be one of the best albums we'll see all year, and "Get Lucky" is it's top hit so far, already taking in a spot at No. 4 on Billboard's Hot 100. It's a cool track with a retro feeling to it that'll be great for those warm summer nights.

Crickets - Drop City Yacht Club

Here's something really new for ya'll. Drop City Yacht Club dropped their first EP late February, and are expecting their first full release this fall. This is a great, relaxing ballad that sounds a bit too much like a Bruno Mars song, but is still worth a listen. Plus, the crickets sound effect is pretty cool.

Safe & Sound - Capital Cities

To me, a good summer hit needs to be catchy, and "Safe & Sound" by Capital Cities is just that. Personally, I can't get enough of indie with electronic feels, and clearly it's not just me. It's popularity comes at a strange time considering the track was released in the summer of 2011, but hey, at least it finally got the recognition it deserves!

A Little Party Never Killed Nobody - Fergie with Q-Tip and GoonRock

Fresh off the Great Gatsby Soundtrack, this song is a fantastic party song, with some awesome throwback moments and some killer beats. It's definitely going to be hot this summer, but whether it's the hit song is questionable. I wouldn't mind it.

Treasure - Bruno Mars

Of course there's got to be a Bruno Mars song in here somewhere. Even though he's only had two albums since hitting the scene, he manages to turn more than the average 2-3 tracks into hit songs. Coming off of Unorthodox Jukebox, "Treasure" just started charting, and it's got that Mars magic that's bound to make it a hit. Surprisingly, it also has that throwback feel that's so popular within this list. Apparently all you need to be a hit nowadays is be super catchy have a cool retro hook. Works for me.

Crazy Kids - Ke$ha

Ke$ha is also fantastic at optimizing her albums to get the most hits. There's always some Ke$ha track lurking around the top hits of the summer. This year, that track will be "Crazy Kids" with Juicy J. It's typical Ke$ha, and even has some cool whistling, which is a perfect addition to any summer song.

Out of My League - Fitz & the Tantrums

Fitz & the Tantrums released their sophomore album More Than Just A Dream  earlier this month, with it's electric single "Out of My League." The band will be touring on Bruno Mar's "Moonshine Jungle Tour" this summer, and they're certainly making a big name for themselves. It's about time too because they're pretty amazing. This summer might finally be their time in the spotlight, and "Out of My League" is just the track to bring them there.

Blurred Lines - Robin Thicke

This song is another favorite for the Song of the Summer. It's really catchy and it's got some cool background noises going on. It's also got potential to be as annoying as "Call Me Maybe" after repeated plays. It's just that constant "whoo" threatening to give me a headache that's the only problem. Other than that, it's a strong competitor that's got a little bit of everything.

Honorary Mentions: #Beautiful - Mariah Carey & Miguel, Gun - CHVRCHES
