Serena Williams Wins Opening Match at Wimbledon

After missing nearly a year, Williams advances to second round, Federer cruises, and more.

Serena Williams Wins Opening Match at Wimbledon

Serena Williams didn't look one hundred percent in her opening round victory over Aravene Rezai, but that was to be expected.  Wimbledon is only the second tournament she has played in since her return from a myriad of health problems.  I'm sure all Williams was worried about was getting the win, and she did just that.  It took the full three sets, but Williams ended up winning the third easily for a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win.

Serena Williams is the defending champion at Wimbledon, but that was also the last tournament that she won.  She has won the grand slam event four times, and she always plays well at the All England Lawn Tennis Club.  She is still one of my favorites to win the event, along with her sister Venus Williams, who also won her opening match.

Number one seed Caroline Wozniacki won her first match in straight sets over Arantxa Parra 6-2, 6-1.  Wozniacki is still looking for her first grand slam championship despite being ranked first in four straight grand slam events. Maria Sharapova also won in straight sets as she looks for her second win at Wimbledon.  She first broke through at this tournament back in 2004 when she was just 17 years of age.

On the men's side, Roger Federer won in straight sets 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, 6-2 over Mikhail Kukushkin.  Federer is the third seed and a favorite to return to the final after his performance at the French Open.  Two-seed Novak Djokovic also was victorious, beating Jeremy Chardy in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, 6-1.  Djokovic is looking to rebound after falling to Federer in the French Open semifinals.  American hopeful Andy Roddick won his first round match 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 over Andreas Beck.  American men have not won a grand slam event since Roddick won the U.S. Open in the Summer of 2003, or in other words, are 0-30 since Roddick's win.
