Fall Out Boy Reunites, Announces New Album and Tour

In this article…

I won't lie: Fall Out Boy used to be one of my favorite bands. I will defend their album From Under the Cork Tree until I die. But then they kind of went Hollywood. They started covering Michael Jackson and their music lost the edge that their earlier stuff had. It happens to a lot of groups, and that's why I was kind of happy that they broke up (or went on "indefinite hiatus" as they called it).

But Monday the group surprisingly announced they were back with a new song, a new album, and a new tour. Via Rolling Stone:

After going on hiatus in November 2009, Fall Out Boy have returned with a new single, album and tour. "My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up)" is the Chicago group's first new music since "Alpha Dog," from their 2009 Greatest Hits compilation. The new tune is packed with stadium-sized theatrics and Patrick Stump's scorching wail.

"My Songs" is the first single from Fall Out Boy's forthcoming fifth studio record, Save Rock and Roll, out May 7th. The record also marks the 10th anniversary of the band's debut full length, Take This to Your Grave. It will be their first LP since 2008's Folie á Deux.

I was hoping for a return to form with the new song. What I got was more of the same. The single is... I don't know. I really don't know how to describe it without sounding mean. The start has a Sleigh Bells feel to it, but then it just becomes something generic sounding. This isn't the Fall Out Boy that I gravitated to, that's for sure, and I don't think Save Rock and Roll will do that. Not if the first single is any indication.

I know they are still the guys that made "Saturday" and "Sugar, We're Going Down," but this new stuff just confuses and disappoints me.

Watch the video for "My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up)" below and check out their tour dates. They play NYC's Webster Hall tonight and LA's Roxy on Thursday as they prep for the larger tour that begins in May.
