Azealia Banks "Atlantis" Video Is Insane

by Photo of Ross Bernhardt

With cheap and ridiculous effects, Banks creates a trippy aquatic-themed video for her song.

In the last 24 hours, I have been exposed to a couple music viewing experiences that have practically blown my mind.  These are things that I never imagined seeing or really have good reason to imagine seeing.  These are preposterous yet phenomenal musical visual creations are equal parts appalling and intriguing, yet I can't look away from either one.

The first was Rihanna's live performance on this week's SNL.  Artists are getting more creative with the stage designs on SNL in recent years, most notably Kanye West and his incredible performance of "Power" a couple years ago.  Rihanna took that to a whole new level Saturday night with her performance of "Diamonds."  Behind her and her band was a graphic-infused set that used effects and likely a green screen to depict a bunch of weird images in the background.  Making things even weirder was everyone in the band wearing white shirts that acted like movie screens for the images.  It was surreal and very distracting.  Take a look below.

Apparently the Internet wasn't too pleased with Rihanna because the designs were Tumblr patterns or something.  I'm just mad because it was a potential seizure-inducing display of weird that looked like it was done just for the sake of doing it.

Following a very similar path, the video for Azealia Banks' song "Atlantis" is a green screen wonder with so much crazy shit going on I can't really make sense of it all.  Banks is underwater with sharks, dolphins, jellyfish, seahorses, and anything else you can imagine all while she raps and dances through it all.  The middle sequence is especially alarming in the middle when a panorama of the ocean is taken with several glimpses of Banks' escapades down below.  There are closeups of her eyes, Banks re-imagined with octopus tentacles, and even Banks riding a shark wielding a trident.  If Rihanna's performance was surreal, this was beyond surreal.

I don't know why I can't look away.  I was probably hypnotized by all of the cheap effects or something.  Either way, I hope something snaps me out of it, because it is likely unhealthy to keep watching these.
