New Shows on Broadway This Season

This fall and winter season, Broadway audiences will have plenty of new shows to check out. There are new productions well known plays such as Cyrano de Bergerac and Annie: The Musical as well as adaptations of the holiday movies Elf and A Christmas Story. Wheather you’re seeing a Broadway show for the first time or you’re a musical theater nerd, you’re likely to have heard of some of the actors who will be appearing in the following plays opening this November. They have all been in headline-making movies and now they’re ready to make their curtain call. Whatever your taste might be, there will be something for everyone this holiday season at the great white way.

Alicia Silverstone played popular High School girl Cher in Clueless and was Batgirl in Batman & Robin opposite George Clooney.  Next month will be the third time that she appears on Broadway. She is playing Sara in the The Performers directed by Evan Cobnet. This new play written by David West Road is about two friends who attend the Adult Film Awards in Las Vegas. One of them is up for an award but things don’t turn out quite as he planned. It opens on November 14 at the Longacre Theatre. Other members of the cast are Cheyenne Jackson, Henry Winkler, Daniel Breaker, Jenni Barber and Ari Graynor.

Katie Holmes of Dawson's Creek fame was famously married to Tom Cruise. After a tabloid frenzy divorce, she will be on Broadway once more playing the role of Lorna in Dead Accounts. The play directed by Jack O’Brien will be opening on November 29 at the Music Box Theatre. The story is about Lorna and her family who are unsure what to make of things when Lorna’s brother Jack unexpectedly returns home with a wife and money. Other cast members are Norbert Leo Butz, Jayne houdyshell, Josh Hamilton and Judy Greer.

Acclaimed Oscar-winning actor Al Pacino is one of the best film actors of his generation. He will now be performing in the Broadway production of one of his classic films, Glengarry Glen Ross at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. The Pulitzer Prize-winning drama written by David Mamet and directed by Daniel Sullivan will open on November 11. The story centers around a group of salesman who become desperate to be the Glengarry sales lead and win a car. Things get very heated as they try not only to win but to also keep their jobs. Other cast members are Bobby Cannavale, David Harbour, Jeremy Shamos, Richard Schiff, John C. McGinley and Murphy Guyer.

Jessica Chastain charmed audiences as a perky housewife in The Help, for which she earned an Oscar nomination. Although she has never performed on Broadway, she is no stranger to the stage. She was classically trained in theater at Julliard’s prestigious school of drama. She will be playing the role of Catherine Sloper in The Heiress directed by Moises Kaufman. The play opens on November 1st at the Walter Kerr Theatre. The story is based on Henry James’ novel Washington Square about a woman whose enormous family wealth makes her suspicious of her suitors. Other cast members includes Judith Ivey, Dan Stevens and Oscar nominee David Strathairn.
