Twitter’s funniest person will follow in the footsteps of Louis C.K., Jim Gaffigan, and Aziz Ansari.

Comedian Rob Delaney Will Be Self-Releasing Stand-Up Special

Rob Delaney is really starting to make a name for himself, and he's been doing so in unconventional ways.  The comedian really started gaining a following not in the traditional sense, but through Twitter.  His feed is filled with hilarious tweets about sex, Mitt Romney, and a topics that show nothing is out of bounds.  Back in May, Delaney was awarded the Funniest Person On Twitter title during Comedy Central's Comedy Awards.  Now he's using that fame to follow what was first unconventional but is starting to become commonplace.

Delaney will self-release his first stand-up special online, following in the footsteps of Louis C.K., Jim Gaffigan, and Aziz Ansari.  The special, Live at the Bowery Ballroom, will be released digitally on his website on September 4th and can be downloaded for $5.

Delaney credits this opportunity to his large Twitter following (555,000). Delaney stated, “I’m going to try to step up a level and see if that works out. All signs point towards this being a good decision, and we will soon find out if it is. There’s no way to fail. What’s bad? I have to go do more standup to make more money? Great. There’s nothing I’d rather do.”

Like C.K. and Gaffigan before him, this move is one that eliminates the middleman and gives the performer complete control.  High-profile artists are starting to adopt this format more and more, and it's not surprising.  When you have control over your product, you can give it to your fans at prices that are fair to them and in a format that is most conducive to them.  The transition is starting now with the distribution of stand-up specials, but this will eventually start to happen with performances and concerts and festivals.

Delaney is probably the least well-known of the comedians who have sold their specials this way, but I think his star will surely rise afterwards.  Here's a taste of Delaney's stand-up comedy.  Be forewarned: it contains very NSFW language.
