The newest trailer for Rupert Fleischer's Gangster Squad has been released today. The movie takes place in 1940s Los Angeles, where the LAPD are eager to take down gangster Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn). Cohen belongs to the “Jewish Mafia”, an east coast mafia that migrated to the west and built an empire. Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin play Sergeants who seem to diverge on how to take down Cohen, with Brolin being more straight-laced and Gosling more instinctive. Other members of the cast include Nick Nolte as the chief of police, Emma Stone as Ryan Gosling's mob-connected love interest, and Giovanni Ribisi as a fellow detective. Focusing on the Jewish Mafia is an interesting departure from the Italian-American gangster depictions we often get in film. The cast is good, and the movie is shot stylishly with muted colors and moody landscapes. The plot seems basic, however; it may be fun, but it has little in the way of substance. But perhaps Gangster Squad seeks to be a high-energy thriller rather than Gangs of New York 2, and that's fine by me. Gangster Squad will be released September 7th by Warner Bros. Pictures.
