Seth Meyers
Performing June 14th, 2013
Last week, the world was abuzz with rumors that Seth Meyers could be stepping down as Saturday Night Live head writer to become the male counterpart to Kelly Ripa on Live! (with just Kelly at the moment). Yesterday, Meyers put a stop to it.
“No, no, no, no, no. I know [Regis' replacement] is a very important thing down there, but right now, what I would say to you: I'm really in love with the job I have. I'm very excited to be going back [to SNL] for the election season, which is always fun.”
Of course he would stay for an election season! What were we thinking? Nothing is better fodder for SNL than a presidential election, and this one is already a doozy. Oh, the debate coverage will be so good! Remembering SNL's take on the vice-presidential debate between Sarah Palin and Joe Biden four years ago, I imagine they'll pull out all the stops for the inevitable Romney-Obama debates.
On a side note, there's gossip that Jason Sudeikis may be leaving SNL this season, but I'm begging you Jason, stay on through November. We need you for both Biden and Romney, and I won't take Bill Hader as an answer. Moving on.
While some may have thought Meyers would have been a great addition to Live! With Kelly, and that a crispy new head writer for SNL might have been refreshing, Meyers is excellent at what he does. Especially when it comes to politics and current events (he's been doing Weekend Update forever).
I think Meyers' speech at last year's White House Correspondents Dinner is proof perfect of his talent. Being a talk show host would have been a mistake.
