If you were being a great daughter to your dad yesterday and allowed him to watch the NBA Finals when part 1 of Oprah's Next Chapter interview with the Kardasian klan was on, good for you. I'm glad to know that there are still people out there who put their own family before the Kardashians.
Just a week ago, Kim announced that her entire family would be chatting it up with Oprah Winfrey in the Jenner home. This is the first time the whole family, including Lamar, Scott, Bruce, and Kylie & Kendall Jenner would sit down for an interview together. Only Oprah could make this happen. Although we don't want to admit it, we all knew the day would come when the most respected and successful woman in television would interview the royal family of reality television. The Kardashians are mega-stars themselves, but they, like anyone would be…were completely excited and flattered that Oprah wanted to interview them. Even Bruce Jenner let his “giddyness” show when Oprah finally arrived.
Oprah sat down first with the four Kardashian kids and it was obvious that she did her research. She kept up well with the bunch, hitting them with questions that have needed answers since like, yesterday. I was absolutely amazed by Oprah's ability to channel my exact thoughts. All of the questions I have on post-it labeled “To Ask When I Meet The Kardashians” on my laptop were featured on the episode with the top question being, “What are you famous for?”
Khloe admitted that she never projected them being famous and it was never a goal for her. They grew up around people like Bruce Springstein who regulars would consider gods, but she never thought of them as celebrities…just successful. Rob downplayed the idea that they were “famous” and “celebrities,” admitting that he hated the arrogance those words implied. Honestly, Rob should be happy that people associate these words with him. If it weren't for him being “famous” or a “celebrity,” why else would he think that he could come out with a sock line and actually have customers. Kourtney tells Oprah that she never felt comfortable in the limelight and is still adjusting to it. But, who really cares? The three definitely gained their stardom from the show, but it is to their sister that Oprah is really directing this question to. Kim says that she's famous for being on television and Khloe adds that Kim's body definitely has a lot to do with her fame. Wrong answer Kim, but thanks Khloe, we're finally getting somewhere.
Later, during Oprah's one-on-one with Kim, she finally reveals that it was her sex tape with rapper Ray J that propelled her into “celebrity” status. The sex tape featured her in a different kind of “reality” television. Prior to the tape's release, she had been recognized simply as the daughter of one of OJ Simpson's lawyers and as a pal to Paris and Nicky Hilton, but she hadn't become the star that we know today until the sex tape's leak. I questioned if she had taken some tips from the heiress and had a hand in leaking the tape, but Kim swears to Oprah that she had nothing to do with it. She never wanted to humiliate her family. No one lies to Oprah.
Speaking of humiliation, Kim and Oprah also spoke about Kim's marriage to Kris Humphries. Kim wasn't comfortable sharing what exactly made them break up, which is funny because she did share that she was having sex at the age of 15. However, she admitted that she was “bored” with her marriage. I'd say that maybe Humpries didn't have anything to offer besides basketball, but it's obvious that Kim likes basketball. Oprah also questioned if her extravagant wedding was a publicity stunt, but Kim shot that long-lived rumor down.
“He asked me to marry him,” she tells Oprah. True, Kim didn't propose to him, but maybe her “momager” Kris did. I guess Kim heard me whisper that because she shot that idea down too. Kris Jenner even questioned her motive to get married. She could see that her daughter was changed and she wasn't sure that Kim was making the right decision. 72 days later proved that moms are always right, but Kim doesn't regret her decision. Although she fell into depression after their breakup, Kim said that “if a real lesson was learned, I'm fine with having experienced that.”
Mom Kris Jenner seems to feel the same way about the negative criticism she received. She's been told that she is “exploiting” her children and “pimping” them out. If she is, she's doing a damn good job at it. Kris Jenner calls it taking advantage of the situation they've been blessed with, however. And she's right. The “momager” is obviously the backbone of the family and has proven to be one of the greatest hustlers of all time. She makes the stage moms on “Toddlers and Tiaras” look like her interns.
In the next part of the Kardashian interview which premieres Sunday June, 24 on OWN, Oprah will meet Khloe and Lamar to talk babies, Kourtney and Scott (sadly, not Mason) and Bruce and Kris. She'll even talk with Kendall and Kylie. Oprah will begin part 2 with Kim and it is obvious that she will bring up Kanye West. I'm kind of hoping that Kanye will appear out of no where and, of course, apologize to Oprah for interrupting and stay for the rest of Kim's interview. Wishful thinking.
Kim seems to have reached a new level of maturity, but I question if it's simply Oprah's ability to bring that out in people. She doesn't seem like the self-centered person she was in the earlier “KUWTK” episodes and even Oprah admits this.
No matter how much you admit you hate the Kardashians, you must admit that they are a great family. Oprah doesn't simply interview people because they are famous. She interviews people who she believes in, and it is obvious that she believes in the strength of the Kardashian family.
