Nerlens Noel Shocks No One, Signs With Kentucky

The nation’s number one recruit announced his intentions by shaving “UK” into the back of his head.

Nerlens Noel Shocks No One, Signs With Kentucky

Earlier this week, Nerlens Noel, the number one college basketball recruit in the country who at that time was still undecided, tweeted this: "Gon shock the world," in reference to his soon-to-come college commitment.

Noel had already narrowed down his choices to Georgetown, Kentucky, and Syracuse.  The only one of those choices I would classify as shocking would be Georgetown.  The Hoyas don't land the number one recruit very often (I believe Patrick Ewing would have classified as the number one recruit back in 1981), and that's not typically the schools that the flashy recruits choose.  Syracuse has gotten major recruits fairly consistently in recent years.  Noel choosing Kentucky and recruiting machine John Calipari would be the least surprising option that he could choose.

Of course now that anyone makes any kind of decision, they have to announce it on live television.  Noel declared his intentions live on ESPNU last night, and here's what unfolded:

<script src="http://player.espn.com/player.js?pcode=1kNG061cgaoolOncv54OAO1ceO-I&width=576&height=324&externalId=espn:7803652&thruParam_espn-ui[autoPlay]=false&thruParam_espn-ui[playRelatedExternally]=true"></script>

Color me shocked!  What was supposed to be the shocking part of that announcement, Nerlens, your choice of Kentucky or your new hair style?  To be honest, I was mildly surprised by his methods, but this didn't rock my world.  Anything other than Kentucky would have made me raise my eyebrows a little bit, but going to Kentucky is so bland, so ho-hum.  If that's your definition of shocking the world, you lead a very sheltered life.

The number two recruit in the country also made his commitment on live television last night.  Shabazz Muhammad, the top small forward in the nation, chose UCLA over Kentucky and Duke.  That, to me, is more surprising than Noel's choice. UCLA had a pretty tumultuous season last year, and Muhammad might be able to help Ben Howland make fans forget all about it.
