Watch: Dirk Nowitzki Banks Game-Winner

Dirk has made some ridiculous shots, but this one would be ridiculous even by his standards.

Watch: Dirk Nowitzki Banks Game-Winner

If Earth was invaded by aliens from outer space and the only way that the human race could be saved was to beat the aliens in a game of H-O-R-S-E, I would put the fate of humanity on the large German shoulders of one Dirk Nowitzki.  Dirk makes the impossible look completely routine, especially from the perimeter.  Nowitzki would destroy the aliens with fadeaway 30-footers and bank shots from every spot you could conceive.  Earth would be saved from enslavement, and Dirk would be rightfully lionized.

Last night, Dirk hit one of those H-O-R-S-E shots last night to elevate the Dallas Mavericks over the Orlando Magic.  With the game tied, Nowitzki received the ball with a one-on-one matchup against Hedo Turkoglu.  Nothing against Hedo, but that was never going to end well.

Dirk's fadeaway is the most un-guardable shot in the NBA, and on that shot he didn't even need to jump.  He just leaned back on one foot, cocked the shot back, and let it fly.  Then he had to go Tim Duncan and bank the shot for good measure, adding that extra layer of skill and touch to a shot taken in the final 10 seconds of the game.

And then the tongue.  My god, the tongue!  He sticks it out in defiance of the Orlando crowd who knew it was coming, but still defied the inevitability by wishing Dirk would fail.  That will be a lesson to you, Orlando Magic fans.  Doubting Dirk or wishing ill will against him will only make his triumphs sting more.
