Watch: Timbers' Army Belts Out National Anthem

The 17th season of the MLS kicked off this weekend, and last night the Portland Timbers hosted the Philadelphia Union on ESPN2's first televised game of the season.  Before Portland home games, the large cheering section, known as the "Timbers' Army", often sings the National Anthem in place of a guest performer.  Last night was no different, and even a chilly, dismal, rainy night couldn't stop the Army from belting out "The Star-Spangled Banner" with patriotic gusto.  Not enough sports teams do this, and when you watch the video below you can see just how awesome it would be if baseball stadiums or NBA arenas did the same thing.  Video courtesy of the fine folks at Sports Grid:

I can't help but get chills every time I watch it.  Imagine you're a player standing in the middle of the field during this.  A sold-out crowd of 20,323 fans are all screaming at the top of their lungs in collective unison.  How amped up would you be after something like that?  I would be ready to take on the world.

Sure enough, the Timbers played a terrific game and scored some top-notch goals.  After falling behind 1-0 early in the second half, the Timbers quickly leveled the score when Union keeper Zac MacMatch couldn't grip what should have been an easy save.  Then the real fireworks started.  Scottish import Kris Boyd, famous for his time at Rangers, scored his first MLS goal on a beautiful header:

I especially love the call: "New country, same currency: GOALS!"  The entire play was beautiful.  The beautiful and perfectly-placed lob to Kalif Alhassan, followed by the pinpoint cross to the streaking Boyd, and then the spot-on header to finish it off.  Soccer at its finest.

But Portland wasn't done.  Alhassan made a run off a short free kick and put the exclamation point on the win with a beautiful chip shot into the left corner of the net (courtesy of The Original Winger):

From start to finish, that characterizes as a terrific opening night for Portland.  The Timbers' Army should sing the National Anthem every game if it will spur on performances like this from their club.
