Lana Del Ray Is a Britney Spears Fan

Well, I just don’t know what kind of world we’re living in anymore. It used to be, as a pop star, when asked who your musical or stylistic influences were, a teeny bopper, or pretty punk star would respond with classic rock, underground hip hop, classic soul. Pretty much, anything that would make them sound more interesting, nuanced, layered, than they actually are.

NOW, thanks to the goddamn hipsters, just the opposite is true. Lana Del Ray, on this whimsical tour de…something that has been her rise to fame and, er, notoriety, Lana has only been confusing me to the point where I can’t tell what is manufactured, what is organic, what is a publicity stunt – and WHY DO I CARE? In a radio interview when she was asked who she admires, Lana responded: “I'm not really interested in a ton of female musicians but there is something about Britney that compelled me – the way she sings and just the way she looks.” That’s it. I give up! Now it’s cool to be influenced by Britney Spears? Well that’s funny because, in my writing, I always work to emulate Snooki’s literary pursuits.
