Johnny Depp Terrifies In First 'Black Mass' Trailer

Depp’s turn as infamous mobster Whitey Bulger looks like the meatiest role he’s had in years.

Johnny Depp has had a pretty weird stretch of roles over the past few years. His performances haven't been received very well, but we know that this guy is an amazingly talented actor. It was only a matter of time before he found something that could really test his abilities, and the first trailer for Black Mass makes me think this is finally the one  that gets him on the right track.

Depp strikes a menacing tone as infamous Boston mobster Whitey Bulger in this new true crime drama. There's a growl in his voice, his delivery, that carries a sinister tone. The dramatic score that accompanies his monologue becomes unnerving as it goes on. He looks a little like Hannibal Lecter in the opening shot, and the intensity just escalates and crescendos as the trailer moves along. I got the feeling that his friend who spilled the beans on his family's steak recipe was going to swim with the fishes at the end of the trailer, but I guess we'll have to wait until the actual film for that to happen.

Depp is the biggest name in a film full of huge names. Starring alongside him are Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Dakota Johnson, Kevin Bacon, Juno Temple, Corey Stoll, Adam Scott, Jesse Plemons, Peter Sarsgaard and Julianne Nicholson. Scott Cooper directs a screenplay from Jez Butterworth (Edge of Tomorrow, Get On Up) and Mark Mallouk adapted from the book by Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neil.

We'll have to wait until September 18th to see what kind of havoc Depp's Bulger brings upon Boston in Black Mass, and this feels like something that could garner Depp (and others, who we really don't get to see work) some Oscar talk.
