Ottawa Senators Assistant Coach Mark Reeds Passes Away

The NHL Playoffs begin today, but one team will enter the postseason with heavy hearts. Mark Reeds, an assistant coach with the Ottawa Senators, passed away after a battle with cancer yesterday. He was 55 years old.

The Senators hired Reeds, a former player who played eight seasons with the St. Louis Blues and Hartford Whalers, as an assistant in 2011. The team announced his diagnosis last year, and it was announced that his condition was inoperable last month.

Via SI.com, here's what owner Eugene Melnyk said of Reeds' passing:

"It is with very heavy hearts that all of us within the Senators family remember Mark who was truly a wonderful father, husband, player, coach and friend," Senators owner Eugene Melnyk said in a statement. "Mark’s charismatic fighting spirit was present right until the end. We are all better for having had the opportunity to work so closely with Mark whose passion for life, hockey and his family will leave an indelible mark on our organization. The entire Ottawa Senators organization sends its deepest condolences to the Reeds family."

The Senators finished the 2014-2015 season with a record of 43-26-13 and 99 points. They earned the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference and will face the Montreal Canadiens in the first round. Game one is tonight at 7:00 pm. The Senators will be carrying the weight of this loss with them through the playoffs, and I'm sure they are thinking that a great way to honor their coach would be to win it all.
