Kendrick Lamar Unleashes the Video for 'King Kunta'

In this article…

In 1995, legendary rapper Tupac released the video for his single, “California Love” featuring Dr. Dre.

20 years later, Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar released his video for “King Kunta” in the same location where “California Love” was shot: Compton Swap Meet.

With his latest album, To Pimp a Butterfly, still No. 1 on the Billboard 200, Lamar released the video for his latest single “King Kunta.” In the video, Lamar performs atop the Compton swap meet, while the entire city cheers him on and shows him plenty of love. In the video, Lamar also makes a point to display his rightful ownership of the throne.

The song, “King Kunta” is a reference to an 18th century slave, Kunta Kinte, who was known for having his right foot cut off to prevent him from escaping his plantation. Lamar takes this story, along with allusions to the "yams" in Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achibe, to juxtapose the past and present plights and temptations considering the fact that Lamar is a wealthy black man in America; he is “oppressed like a slave, but dominant like a king.” This notion is visually displayed in the video for “King Kunta.”
