Jake Gyllenhaal is on to his next mentally unstable character in the first trailer for his new movie Southpaw. Here, Gyllenhaal plays Billy "The Great" Hope, the Middleweight Champion boxer of the world. In an instant, Hope loses everything. His wife (Rachel McAdams) is killed, custody of his daughter is taken from him, and he gets suspended from boxing. Hope is in full meltdown when he goes to trainer Titus "Tick" Willis (Forrest Whitaker) looking for work and training. It's a long uphill climb for Hope as he works to build himself back up and get his family back.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer) and written by Kurt Sutter (Sons of Anarchy, The Shield), there is plenty of hope (pun intended) that this will all come together into a fantastic film. While Fuqua hasn't done anything really memorable since Training Day, he's still a solid director. There are also big expectations for the first screenplay from prolific TV scribe Sutter. The trailer shows plenty of character, which is par for the course if you've seen Sutter's previous work.
Gyllenhaal has portrayed many characters that showcase instability in the past. His recent turn as Louis Bloom in Nightcrawler had critics raving, but his ability to bring the humanity out of these seemingly troubled characters is what's becoming so impressive about Gyllenhaal. Plus, just look at how jacked he got for this role:

I mean jeez, GET SOME Jake Gyllenhaal!
With solid supporting cast (McAdams, Whitaker, 50 Cent, and Rita Ora, it's easy to understand why people are getting excited about this. Let's hope it lives up to the hype of the trailer.
